Jaden Pinkett Smith leads us into the new age of fashion as he models for Louis Vuitton womenswear fall ’16.
Jaden Smith is no stranger to defying gender rules, often known for his unique look in which he disregards the social norms and opts to wear, super hero costumes and dresses. But this fall he has been more than just the new face of Vuitton’s fall, but the inspiration too.
Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director of the house of Louis Vuitton, explained why the label wanted Jaden to model for this particular collection. “Why does Jaden Smith star in this campaign? He represents a generation that has assimilated the codes of true freedom, one that is free of manifestos and questions about gender,” says Ghesquière in a Louis Vuitton press release. “Wearing a skirt comes as naturally to him as it would to a woman who, long ago, granted herself permission to wear a man’s trench or a tuxedo.”

The actor/rapper is has always been well received for his clothing choices, but this campaign has especially taken to fans well. One wrote: “Brilliant campaign.” Whilst another added: “So admire you. No labels. Live your life.”
Ghesquière himself could be described as a fan, as he went on to state “Jaden Smith conveys something very interesting about the integration of a global wardrobe, he’s found an instinctive balance that makes his extraordinary attitude a new norm. That really inspired me in the creative process for this collection.” Check out the series 4 campaign shoot by Bruce Weber below.
Whilst Jaden may not be the first to to bend the gender rules, ###, he certainly is someone to bring it to the mainstream spotlight, which is ever more important in today’s society where feminism and equality is becoming a fearlessly strong movement.
Another fan goes on to say ‘[We] You give clothes too much power.’ in response to negative comments following the campaign shoot, the fact is the statement couldn’t be more true, and Jaden Smith has bought light to that. Jaden plays a noble role in bringing us to the new age of fashion, now to just sit and wait in anticipation for the big campaign release, soon to be out.
Zara is the first to bring a gender neutral range to the high street market, simply named ‘UNGENDERED‘ hopefully this too will pave the way to the new age of fashion.
